We were intrigued by the sod roofs we saw from the road and stopped by to investigate. The woman manning the visitor entrance was getting ready to leave, but kindly let us walk through the farmhouse. Fascinating to see how the walls and rooms were constructed. Some of the rooms were surprisingly formal. Nice examples of clothing and implements used long ago.
I recently took two separate flights from Myvatn in their Cessna over the erupting volcano (Holuhraun). I sat up front the first time and at the side (middle) the second time. I had different pilots each time, who although were only half my age (!) were very capable and I felt very safe with them. Each one took a slightly different route, possibly because of the direction of the wind and the volcano blowing, so I got two different views, one slightly higher. Both were fantastic. Would highly recommend this trip (twice!), while the volcano is still erupting. Great little operation. First flight was cancelled because of sandstorms, but I was booked on the next day - they don't fly if it's too dangerous! There is also a slightly bigger plane, with wings below the windows, that can go a little lower, I believe, but the view wouldn't be as good for photographs, so if you're a photographer, ask for the Cessna.
I wanted to go horseback riding while in the north of the country, which I have heard is the best location for horseback riding. I had a short tour, only an hour and a half, through the mountains nearby the stables. The surroundings are absolutely amazing; my photos just couldn't do them justice. The horses seemed generally calm and strong, and the guides were great. I don't often go horseback riding (this was only the third time in my life), but I never had the occasion to be worried. I highly recommend the experience and this company!
The botanical garden in Akureyri is a beautiful floral garden full of life and color in the summer and mystery over the wintertime.
Best way to describe this place is as a old dusty hobbit house :-). Very interesting and steeped in history. Would like to have spent another hour there but was part of a round trip organised by the cruise I was on
